Android users who are bored of their usual wallpapers are in luck: an update to Google Photos now allows users to set their wallpaper as a random, rotating distribution of saved photos.
Google Photos version 5.22 automatically includes the update. Therefore, if you go to your phone’s wallpaper picker and look at the live wallpapers, you should see the “Memories” option. Once selected, your phone will start extracting photos from the Memories section of Google Photos to switch between the two in the background. You will then be able to preview what you will see as your wallpaper before confirming.
The main catch here is that Google defines what counts as memory based on its machine learning algorithms, so you won’t be able to really decide what shows up. Photos can range from gorgeous views to a pic of your sad lunch at the home office. Who knows!
Of course, you might as well try this out now if you want, given that Google is phasing out unlimited free photo storage on June 1, 2021. Google Photos will start charging for storage over 15 GB, which is over- beyond a disappointment. If you think you might end up switching services, now is the time to try live wallpaper.
