Google Pixel 4A 5G Owners Report Problems Using Their Touchscreens

Google says it is aware of an issue with the Pixel 4A 5G’s touchscreens and is working on a fix. Some devices don’t consistently respond to taps on the lower part of the screen, which has a particular impact on people who have opted for three-button navigation over swipes. Android Police spotted complaints from 4A 5G owners experiencing the issue, which appears to have occurred after the December security patch was released.

Google’s response came from a post from the Pixel Support Forum. The company says it will fix the issue “in a future software update,” but it looks like it will be at least a few weeks away from now. Android Police reports that the January security patch did not fix it. In the meantime, Google advises users to work around the issue with specific instructions for pressing navigation controls:

1. When you tap icons on the edge of the screen, tap the center of the button or the side of the button / icon furthest from the edge of the screen.
2. When pressing icons, including navigation buttons at the bottom of your screen, use your fingertip or thumb instead. This will help improve tactile recognition.

It’s no easy task trying to consciously change the way you do something like pressing a button on your phone screen, so hopefully Pixel 4A 5G users will only have trying these awkward workarounds for a little longer.

Google’s January patch fixed a slew of other Pixel 4A 5G bugs and quirks with the security update. So even if the touchscreen issue persists, at least one audio bug that caused crackles in certain situations is no longer a problem.
