Google Pixel 5 has passed the JerryRigEverything durability test and it shows “large amounts of plastic”. Google advertises that the phone has a “water resistant metal body” and a “100% recycled aluminum casing,” but nowhere does it mention the plastic coating or bio resin on top of the metal. Teardown showed that most of the curvature of the phone was plastic over metal. The area of the back panel where the wireless charging coil is located has no metal between itself and the plastic back.
Zack Nelson, on his YouTube channel JerryRigEverything, has put the Pixel 5 through its extensive durability tests. The phone’s screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 6 and started showing scratches at level 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, which was expected. The most interesting development takes place at the back, where Nelson found “large amounts of plastic”. The YouTuber also noted that Google’s website mentions the metal three times, but not once did it mention plastic or organic resin.
Digging to the side eventually revealed metal under the layers of plastic. The volume buttons are plastic but the power button is metal. On the back, a significant amount of scratches and peeling revealed the copper wireless charging coil. The Pixel 5 supports wireless charging, but this technology has one limitation; it doesn’t work through metal. So, to get around this limitation, Google removed all the metal from that particular area on the back so that the charging coil and the wireless charging surface it comes in contact with only contains the biological resin in between. .
Nelson also discovered that the battery is placed just below the charging coil and is also not protected by any metal. Pushing down on the back panel punctured the battery and started to smoke which ruined the phone.
Biological resin is significantly more durable than regular plastic and does not dissolve when stored in acetone. Applying a significant amount of heat made it a bit soft and easy to pull apart, revealing the metal on the top and bottom of the phone. However, even with the middle part of the phone not being reinforced with metal, the Pixel 5 didn’t bend easily, giving owners some reassurance.
