Is this the Google Pixel 5?
Google’s next smartphone, the Pixel 5, is coming soon – maybe as early as next month. But as the leaked images and renders continue to emerge, it becomes clear that Google appears to have given up on its ambitions to produce a flagship that beats the iPhone.
The latest renderings come from the very reliable Steve Hemmestoffer, whose Twitter identity, @OnLeaks, published the images in collaboration with Pricebaba. And they don’t make it easy to view if you’re a Pixel fan who wants their next phone to be an iPhone drummer.
The weather was, the Pixel line was absolutely up there with the best top-flight smartphones. It came in late for several cameras, but that didn’t really matter as Google’s mastery of photography through software was second to none. The way he got bokeh effects through a single lens was a bit short of dark magic. These rumors show a panel of cameras with two lenses through.
Last year, on the Pixel 4, it introduced facial recognition with the only system close to Apple’s Face ID. And while it doesn’t always have the prettiest notch, or the edge-to-edge screens of rivals, it has caught up with the Pixel 4a in recent days. It is a very powerful handset but very affordable.
And it looks like the lure of a low price has become the driving force behind the Pixel 5. There have already been rumors that the 5 has a chipset that will be mid-range while supporting 5G (the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765).

But the renderings have one element that stands out, and not in a good way: the fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone. Listen, I’ll be clear, I’ve always hated a rear fingerprint sensor. Seems to me to be in the worst place you can place such a sensor, requires a combination of fair design and nimble finger dexterity. It’s something that people have gotten used to and are making the most of.
But it is – more than most other features – the defining element of the budget phone. Put the fingerprint sensor on the back and you will have to charge a lower price.
In the case of the Pixel 5, however, that indicates something worse: the excellent facial recognition is gone, sacrificed on the altar of all-screen design.
Renderings show the same holepunch camera at the top left of the screen as on the Pixel 4a. This is not enough space for a complete facial recognition system.
This all seems to confirm rumors that the next Pixel will not be a flagship for the iPhone 12, Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, etc.
Unless.
I admit I’m holding on here, but is there no way it’s not the Pixel 5 at all, but the Pixel 4a 5G? It needs to be revealed in full at the same time, and these images look completely like 4a, except for the additional rear camera.
Well Steve Hemmestoffer says no, pointing out that the Pixel 4a 5G has a headphone jack, but it doesn’t. Additionally, the Pixel 4a 5G is expected to have a slightly larger screen.
That’s not to say that this phone will be lacking in dazzling features: we already know from the code details that new photo features are coming.
Additionally, Android Central released a list of expected specs including bigger battery, reverse wireless charging, and more.
We’ll find out soon enough, but if that’s really true, then the Pixel 5 could be an anti-limit for Google fans in some ways – although a great price, like the Pixel 4a pulled off, could largely be. compensate for this.
