Google’s advanced reveal of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro answered many questions about the handsets, but it also opened up a lot more. The most urgent of these: Can a bulky-looking phone with such an unusual camera “visor” be comfortable in the hand?
Obviously, we won’t know for sure until we have review units to test us out, but Chrome Unboxed founder Robbie Payne decided he wanted answers up front. a handset to put inside.
Payne had tried the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra before, but found it uncomfortably large, but was pleasantly surprised by the feel of the Pixel 6 Pro case. “Instead of that towering brick that I envisioned, the case showed me that the Pixel 6 Pro won’t be much different from the phone I’m already carrying in the OnePlus 8T,” he wrote. Indeed, it is almost suitable:
But more pleasantly, it looks like the intimidating reported 6.7-inch size of the Pixel 6 Pro won’t be much larger than that of the 6.3-inch Pixel 4 XL when off-screen space is factored in.
“In fact, with the massive front of the Pixel 4XL, it actually becomes the same size as most modern full-screen phones,” he wrote. “The OnePlus 8T measures 160.7 x 74.1 x 8.4mm, while the Pixel 4XL measures 160.4 x 75.1 x 8.2mm, which makes them almost identical in size.”
Of course, size is only part of the comfort equation, and handsets of similar dimensions can weigh very different amounts. Still, in terms of height, width, and depth, the Pixel 6 Pro seems to be consistent with other bigger devices in recent years.
And while the most distinctive feature of the Pixel 6 handsets – the elongated rear camera bar – might be a design change for the worse, Payne is confident it won’t.
“With this case in my hand, I can tell you that the protrusion is there, it is not subtle, but it is also not much more extended from the body of the phone than any other device module. photo, “he wrote. “I also noticed that the entire camera bar is high enough on the back of the phone that when I pick up the case, I never even get close to my hand to hit it or enter it. contact with her. My bet? Once I get this phone, I won’t think about it anymore.
Payne goes on to praise the placement of the buttons and the fact that “hand gymnastics” should be kept to a minimum, which is encouraging.
But it’s what’s inside that matters, and with the all-new Tensor chip, Google is undoubtedly making a bet. Fortunately, the recent Pixel 6 benchmarks look very promising, and that’s before we tackle the main benefits Google sees in the chip: a “transformed experience for the Pixel’s camera, voice recognition, and other features. 6 “.
We shouldn’t have to wait too long to see if the performance matches the hype, with leaker Jon Prosser expecting the phone to be unveiled on October 19 with a possible Pixel 6 release date of October 28. And, despite Google’s warning about an expensive handset before, it looks like the Pixel 6’s price tag might end up being cheaper than the iPhone 13.
