Love them or hate them, emoji have become a key part of the way many of us communicate, making representation of utmost importance to the way they are designed. With this in mind, Google releases 53 new emoji designed to further integrate gender.
In an exclusive, Fast Company reported on Tuesday that the new emoji would not be expressly masculine or feminine, but ambiguous. The emoji would have undergone many iterations to avoid features that could be interpreted as those of a man or a woman, opting instead for fluid hairstyles and choice of styles.
For example, an emoji swimmer wears what appears to be a tailor rather than a swimsuit or no shirt, and a man is shown with his arms crossed rather than with a bra or no cover of the all. A non-sexist vampire, meanwhile, is represented with a stylish hairstyle and an ornament to the neck. Others include a zombie, a genie and emoji describing various sports activities.
According to the visual elements of emoji shared with Gizmodo, the company still seems to tinker with specific details of the characters, including changes in hairstyle or clothing.
Jennifer Daniel, a Google designer who also sits on the Unicode consortium, told Fast Company that her new emoji design was far removed from specifically male or female details, which is certainly one of the answers to the question of the company. inclusiveness and the ever-growing list of thousands of emoji to choose from.
"The genre is complicated," Daniel told the magazine. "It's impossible to communicate the genre in one image. It's a construction. He lives dynamically on a spectrum. According to Fast Company, sending these emoji out of Andoird, as on iOS, will translate them into male or female equivalents – for the moment, at least, until they are dead. other companies are creating their own gender-inclusive emoji.
A Google spokesman said that emoticons are now available on Android Q Beta for all phone models listed here. They will be distributed to everyone with Android Q, which should come out in the fall.
