Last week, Google removed the ability to disable the status light on Nest Cams to ensure end-user privacy. As a result of this announcement, another change has been made. You will need to reactivate the security camera integration with Nest Protect and Secure.
Today, Google Nest provides a complete smart home security solution. Having multiple devices allows for simple integrations. For example, if your Nest Secure triggers an alarm or Nest Protect detects smoke, you can have your Nest Cam play the content even if it's turned off.
With the change in privacy last week, Google has essentially reset these existing integrations. The change has been put in place to make sure that you always "opt-in every time one of our products sends your audio recordings and video clips to Nest."
We also change the behavior of your cameras when a Nest Secure or Nest Protect alarm detects smoke or carbon monoxide. As of today, you will need to select each of your cameras to start recording during a smoke, carbon monoxide or safety related event, even if this feature was activated before.
In addition to reactivating automatic recording, users can select cameras that they wish to start broadcasting in case of smoke, carbon monoxide or security issues. Fortunately, it is only a single reset, with unchanged behavior once you enable the "Works with Protect" and "Works with Secure" options in the Nest app.
Nest Protect
The emergency clip recording is disabled by default. To enable it, select Protect> Settings> Works with Protect.
Nest Secure
The recording of the security clip is disabled by default. To enable it, go to Guard> Settings> Works with Security.
This reset of Nest Cam recording was announced last week and runs parallel to the controversial behavior change of the camera status lights. These two reactivation preferences are available with the current update of the Nest app (version 5.38) on Android and iOS, which also starts the migration of the Google Account.
