Look, I hate name calling, but anyone who’s still using Windows 7 is actually stupid. OK, I guess they might rather be lazy or indifferent, but ultimately it’s stupid behavior to run an unsupported operating system – especially for a business. And this is why it is very disappointing to learn that Google is extending support for Chrome for Windows 7.
Yes, Google is rewarding stupid behavior by extending support for its Chrome web browser to the now unsupported Windows 7 from July 15, 2021 to January 15, 2022. Why? The search giant claims it’s because many companies still haven’t made the transition from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Unfortunately, that just means Google is enabling this bad security behavior.
“Migrating to Windows 10 was on the roadmap for many companies for the year. But as new priorities for IT teams have emerged, we’ve heard that 21% of businesses are still migrating to Windows 10. With this support extension, businesses, whose upgrades are still pending. ongoing, can rest assured that their users still running Windows 7 will continue to enjoy the security and productivity benefits of Chrome, ”said Max Christoff, CTO of Chrome.

I know what you’re probably thinking – hasn’t COVID-19 slowed down some migration plans? Well, yes, but support for Windows 7 ended on January 14, 2020 – before the pandemic really disrupted the world. In other words, the people responsible would have made the transition by the end of 2019. Anyone still using Windows 7 today has no one to blame but themselves. The coronavirus is not a legitimate excuse.
In the end, Google allows this senseless behavior, and it is very irresponsible. This extended Chrome support will simply give these Windows 7 users yet another reason to push their migration plans even further.
