The company announced Thursday that the next version of its mobile operating system will be calling Android 10. It is currently in public beta and is expected to be rolled out in the coming months.
Google has long named its Android software after treats. After its alpha and beta versions, it launched Android Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Spice Bread, Bee Nest, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jellybean, KitKat, Pacifier, Marshmallow, Nougat, Oreo and Pie.
A Google spokesman said that 10 was referring to the version number of Android Q, stating that it "seemed like the right time to make that change."
"It's even harder for new Android users, who are unfamiliar with the naming convention, to know if their phone is using the latest version," said Google vice president of product management, Sameer Samat, in the article.
Android currently uses 2.5 billion active devices, Samat said. This includes not only Google Pixel phones, but also Samsung, Nokia and many other brands.
The Android logo also had a slight refresh. The green mascot Android shows only the top of his head rather than his whole body. The text, which says Android, under the face is now black rather than green.
