Google says that not disclosing the microphone in its Next Home security device was an "error"

Google announced Wednesday that Alphabet made a "mistake" by not revealing that its Nest Secure home security system had a built-in microphone in its devices.

Earlier this month, Google announced an update to Nest Secure and users could now activate its virtual assistant technology, Google Assistant on Nest Guard.

The published specifications of the device did not mention a microphone, but the updated product page now mentions one.

"The microphone built into the device was never meant to be a secret and should have been included in the technical specifications – it was an error on our part." The microphone never has been enabled and only enabled when users specifically enable the option, "Google told me.

Business Insider first announced the new Tuesday.

Nest, which Google acquired for $ 3.2 billion in 2014, sells video doorbells, security cameras and thermostats that automatically adjust settings based on user behavior.

Alphabet last year integrated Nest, which operated as an independent unit, into its Google hardware group.
