Google sells Titan security keys for users who need extra account protection – and in the future, purchasing and using these hardware keys has become easier. Google has announced some changes that it says will simplify the experience of choosing and using security keys. The changes will go live tomorrow, August 10th.
What is a Titan security key? Simply put, it’s a small, key-like hardware device that blocks other people who don’t have the key from accessing your Google Account. These sticks sell for $ 25 each, and starting tomorrow, they’ll only be offered in two varieties: one with USB-A connectivity and one with USB-C connectivity.
According to Google, both versions of the Titan security key have built-in NFC, which means that for many devices it can be used by simply tapping it on the back of the gadget rather than plugging it in. With this change, Google notes that it will abandon its Bluetooth-based Titan security key.
If you already have a Titan Bluetooth passkey, don’t worry; Google will continue to support this model, in particular by honoring its guarantees. As you might expect, these security keys work with Windows, macOS, Android phones, iPhones, and tablets, including the iPad.
The use of the keys is simple. Google says if your computer only has USB-A ports, you should get the USB-A version of the new Titan dongle. Likewise, if your computer has a USB-C port, you should get this version of the dongle. Many modern devices, including some newer iPad models, have USB-C connectors, which means you can use that same dongle with them.
However, if you have an iPad model that has a Lightning connector, you’ll need to get Apple’s Lightning Adapter and use it with the Titan USB-A dongle for an added layer of security. The new NFC Titan security keys will be available on the Google Store starting tomorrow – and they will include a slight price increase to $ 30 for the NFC Titan USB-A dongle (including a USB-C adapter) and $ 35 for the USB-C NFC Titan key.
