As Google prepares to release the final version of Android 12, we’ve seen an ever-growing number of Google apps benefit from Material You revisions, including Google Clock, Google Calculator, and the Google Phone app. Even more apps that haven’t yet received their respective revamps will have one coming soon. Last month, we learned that Google is working on a redesign of Google Translate’s Material You user interface. Back then it looked good but quite rough and unfinished. The redesign is still not available, but new screenshots have appeared today showing that Google Translate’s new design is quickly taking shape.

While the redesign was first discovered by XDA-Developers, the people of 9to5Google I just revisited it a few versions later, on version 6.23, and it already looks so much better. The UI now draws the colors of your device’s wallpaper, just like other Material You UI elements do in Android 12. One-handed usability is clearly a priority in this redesign, as the most important buttons have been moved down within reach of your thumb. The dynamic theme is now also present in the Conversations view (which allows users to speak to each other in different languages with Translate acting as an intermediary) as well as in the camera, and it also expands to the list of languages.

Some features of the app, such as the phrasebook (as well as some settings and configuration pages) are still unfinished because it is, after all, a work in progress. Likewise, many other features and elements, like the history of recent translations, seem to be entirely missing. So far, however, it looks a lot closer to being finalized than what we saw last time around.
A redesign of this app is long overdue: Although it received a handful of minor changes, the overall user interface remained the same even before the release of Android Pie and Material Theming – and that was in 2018.
The revamped app isn’t really accessible yet, even for manual download, or even for Pixel users. However, as we get closer to the final version of Android 12, and given its rapid evolution, we expect it to be rolled out shortly before or shortly thereafter.
