Google TV is expected to experience a huge expansion over the next year, with huge partners like TCL and Sony already on board. With this extension, we have already seen that Google has a new benchmark design for the remote used with Google TV devices, and apparently this remote will be needed for retail devices.
@AndroidTV_Rumor posted an image gallery on Twitter today, showing these benchmark creations in the flesh. These remotes are specifically the G10 and the G20, both produced by Ohsung based on the Google design. The layout is familiar, thanks to previous footage, but seeing them “in person” shows how similar they look to the Chromecast’s new remote. Button style, icons and fitness are right so google. Notably, the smaller design of the G10 puts Disney + and HBO Max shortcuts on Netflix and YouTube.
In a discussion regarding these remotes, @AndroidTV_Rumor was kind enough to share with us a few more details about these remotes. Apparently it combines perfectly with the current Chromecast with some basic functions that work. However, to unlock all of the remote’s features, a firmware update would be required on Chromecast, and it’s unclear if this is actually planned. It doesn’t really matter, as it currently looks like these remotes won’t be sold to the public, but instead will be for the new Android / Google TV boxes that go on sale throughout 2021.
We’re also told that these designs will be a requirement for manufacturers that release consumer Google TV products in 2021. This includes set-top boxes with Askey, SEI Robotics, Skyworth, and SDMC mentioned. DishTV (not the one you think) already uses the smaller remote design on its SV11 dongle, which actually uses the Android TV UI, not Google TV.
We believe, however, that there may be exceptions to this rule. Sony, for example, probably won’t change their remote layout to match this benchmark design, as they have an established design that has been in use for years, but others like TCL might be willing to do so.
