One of the handiest features of Google Voice is the ability to send text messages through your original phone number and the messaging app. Unfortunately, Google Voice is now on the verge of losing this “soon” message forwarding functionality.
With message forwarding, Google Voice is able to send a copy of your incoming messages to your carrier’s phone number, even allowing you to reply to those messages directly from the SMS app of your choice without opening the phone. An update to the Google Voice app, version 2021.10, started rolling out today through the Play Store, and in it, our APK Insight team discovered a line that said forwarding messages to phones was interrupted. So far, the review does not appear to be live in Android or web apps.

From what we can understand from the terse review, some mobile operators have started blocking incoming messages from the “ghost numbers” that feed the forwarding function of Google Voice. Carrier blocking is likely part of ongoing efforts to eliminate spam calls and messages, and Google would apparently prefer to halt the transfer rather than not have it work with specific carriers.
No specific timeline has been shared as to when Google intends to unplug this particular feature from Voice. It is important to note that the transfer of messages by e-mail should continue to function normally and is not affected by this change.
