Google will deploy ambiguous gender emoji in Android Q

The emoji – a modern interpretation of the default yellow man – will arrive on Pixel phones in beta this week and on all Android Q phones later this year. They include a mix of patterns with characters that could possibly be male or female, with varying lengths of hair and androgynous clothing. They even brought fantastic characters into the fold, with an ambiguous Dracula, a merperson and a wide variety of zombies.

The addition of new emoji can however pose problems on all platforms: an emoji on a Google phone may look different on an iPhone, for example. Since it's currently an exclusive Google project, the genre will still be assigned to the emoji if it's sent to a phone other than Google. But with the tech sector continually looking for ways to promote the inclusion of users, Apple and Samsung will soon catch up.
