We ‘digitize’ documents since they install cameras on smartphones. Taking a quick photo of an invoice, receipt, contract or any other document has always been an option, but real scanning apps are starting to appear on iPhone and Android – apps that attempt to replicate this. that physical scanners can do.

Called Stack, the new app is available for free, but only on Android and only in the US for now. Stack doesn’t come directly from Google, but rather from the giant’s Area 120 incubator. This is where Google engineers pursue their own projects that could later become real Google products.
Stack works like any other document scanning app on iPhone or Android. It uses the camera to create a digital version of your documents. But once the scan is done, Stack uses a few more tricks that might make it a better scan tool than what’s already available in the Google Play Store.
Stack can read some of the key document data and then automatically organize the scanned documents. Folders, or stacks (hence the app’s name), will be labeled automatically, depending on what you’re scanning. Marking a document as a favorite will allow you to place it in a different stack.
The fact that Stack can read the document has another beneficial side effect. You can search the full text to find a document that you cannot otherwise retrieve. Finally, Stack can also work with Google Drive to back up all your scanned documents, so that you can access them on other devices. Scans are saved as PDF files just like in other document scanning applications.
It’s unclear what kind of future Stack Google has as an app, or if Google will ever choose to include it on Android or in its default productivity suite, but Stack is certainly the kind of free app that the Android users will want to give it a try, especially those who tend to scan a bunch of documents with their phone.
