Cursive is a brand new app from Google that lets Chromebook users take handwritten notes. The app debuted on the recently released HP X2 11 Chromebook. While the app comes preinstalled on future stylus-equipped Chromebooks, you can install it on any Chromebook device right now.
Cursive is a fairly straightforward progressive web application (PWA) that lets you draw and doodle notes using your stylus (via 9to5Google). If you have a Chromebook and want to try this new app, go to https://cursive.apps.chrome/notebook/. Then click on the download icon located in the left corner of the address bar to install the app.
When you first open Cursive, it gives you a brief overview of the various features and things you can do with the app. On the home page, a “New Note” button appears in the upper left corner, with a list of notebooks with different themes appearing just below. Similar to Google Docs, recently created and edited notes appear as large cards.
While creating a note, you have access to various tools including a pen, highlighter, eraser, insert images, and select. You can also adjust the pen width and undo or redo changes.
The app also supports various nifty gestures. For example, you can doodle over content to remove it or draw a circle around it to move it around the page.
While anyone with a Chromebook or device running Chrome OS can access Cursive, the app is specifically designed for devices that support the stylus. However, there is a touch mode option that allows users to use their fingers to write and draw.
For now, Cursive remains exclusive to Chromebooks. Although the application is accessible on other platforms like Windows and Mac, most of the features are inaccessible. For example, you can’t create a new note or edit existing notes if you don’t have a device running Chrome OS.
