The idea of Phone Hub for Chrome OS is not new at all. In fact, we’ve been keeping an eye on this new Chromebook feature since July 2020 and watching it evolve as the process progresses. As it picked up functionality and became more fully realized, it also shifted the development channels from Chrome OS. Due to its proximity to full uptime, I’ve been using Chrome OS 89’s beta channel service for over a week at this point and really appreciate it.
For those who don’t know, the Phone Hub feature bridges the gap between your Chromebook and your Android phone a bit more than we currently have, giving users the ability to mirror notifications directly from their Android device ( rejecting on either device removes them on both), turn on the hotspot feature, mute the phone, or locate the phone directly from a Chromebook. There are also a few recent Chrome tabs to pick up where you left off from your last browsing session.
I thought I would share the beta channel availability with everyone this week after actually using it and getting a better idea of what to expect from Phone Hub, but as I put my thoughts together for this post, a member of our Patreon community shared this he now sees Phone Hub available on his Chromebook in the Chrome OS 88 stable channel. While he claims most features only worked unevenly, it’s interesting that some are starting to show this in the latest version of Chrome OS 88.
Phone hub indicators needed in Stable
An important note is the need to display metrics for Phone Hub to appear in the stable channel right now. It doesn’t just appear out of nowhere: you will have to return the found flag to chrome: // flags / # enable-phone-hub to start it. For what it’s worth, I’m in the Chrome OS 89 beta channel and Phone Hub just showed up for me with no additional actions or metrics required.
While this isn’t a full feature arrival by any stretch of the imagination, it is a big upgrade over the availability that can only be found in the Canary and Developer channels up. present. With the way we see the feature showing up for some and not for others, I tend to think that at the moment it is tested at the account level. This is the only way to explain multiple users with the same device, the same version of Chrome OS and the differences in the availability of this feature.
Whether you have the new phone hub available to you now or are still on hold, its showing up for some Chrome OS 89 users right now without the need for a flag tells me that we’ll likely see this roll out at all. users in the next version of the operating system, scheduled for a March 9 release date. It’s just over three weeks from now, and I can tell you that this next update could be important. It sounds like Phone Hub, Holding Space, and maybe the new media player could all show up in Chrome OS 89 with other upgrades. Either way, we’ll find out very soon.
