Google is testing a new background for the smart assistant screens that shows a cartoon frog enjoying or facing the weather in real time. The character, Froggy, has been a part of Google’s weather search results before and has also been highlighted as a minor character in several Google Doodles. Now 9to5Google reports that the creature randomly appears as a new “Photo Frame” option for smart screens for Reddit users and Twitter, where it appears next to existing backgrounds, such as images viewed from your Google Photos account.
The software describes the screen saver as “an adorable frog to give you a lively weather experience”. When activated, the screen displays the current weather forecast, a two-day weather forecast and an animation of Froggy under current conditions. 9to5Google note that these animations include Froggy sunbathing when the weather is nice, or hiding under a plant pot when it rains.
Froggy has appeared on smart screens since at least September of last year. When it becomes more widely available, the background will appear as an option in response to the “Hey Google, change the photo frame” voice command.
