Republican Congressional candidate Mariannette Miller-Meeks leads Democrat Tina Hart by just six votes after a recount in Iowa’s 2nd District.
A state canvassing council is expected to meet on Monday, the legal deadline, to certify the results of the race in which more than 394,400 votes were cast.

Miller-Meeks acknowledged in a statement that the race was “extraordinarily close” but said she was proud of the result and was eager to be certified as the winner.

“Although the race is extremely close, I am proud to have won this competition and look forward to being certified as a winner by the State Executive Council on Monday,” Miller-Meeks said in a statement Saturday. “It is the honor of a lifetime to be elected to serve the people of eastern and southern Iowa.”
Kudos to Miller-Meeks, who is expected to join the ranks of nearly 20 other GOP women newly elected to the House of Representatives, giving the party cause for celebration.

“Congratulations to my friend and the first woman to represent Iowa District 2, [Mariannette Miller-Meeks]! I look forward to serving alongside you in Congress to represent our great state of Iowa, ”Senator Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, wrote on Twitter on Saturday.
“Congratulations! @Millermeeks, ”Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, wrote on Twitter. “More good news for the House.”
Miller-Meeks and Hart have come forward to replace Democratic Rep. Dave Loebsack, who is retiring after seven terms.
Hart called for the district-wide recount after initial county certifications showed her she was trailing by 47 votes after an election in which reporting errors turned the tide between candidates.
In a statement, Hart’s campaign manager Zach Meunier did not say whether the campaign would file a legal challenge in the running, the country’s closest House election. A challenge would trigger a procedure led by a judicial formation.

“We will be taking a close look at what county and state councils are doing on Monday in an effort to ensure that all of Iowa’s voices are fully and fairly heard,” he said.
