GOP Senator: Abortion cases at the Supreme Court were "wrongly decided as a constitutional matter"

Said in an interview with NBC on Sunday that he thought decisive cases concerning abortion in the Supreme Court had been "wrongly judged as a constitutional case".

"These decisions were wrongly taken from the constitutional point of view," Cotton said on "Meet the Press" during a discussion of Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey who established and maintained the right to abortion.

Cotton argued that it is the politicians who should make decisions about abortion.

"These are decisions that the American people should make through their elected representatives," he said.

"People will make different decisions, these decisions will have more democratic legitimacy … if they are available for democratic debate, if people from different points of view through their elected representatives can make these decisions informed by all the relevant facts, "he added.

The debate on abortion rights has recently come to the fore when a series of states have considered legislation limiting abortion rights.

Last week, Alabama's governor, Kay Ivey, signed a bill banning abortion unless there was a threat to the mother's life. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp (right) signed a bill earlier this month that would ban abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.
