Former President Donald Trump has made no secret of his eagerness to end Mitch McConnell’s tenure as Republican leader in the Senate, but lawmakers do not seem very interested, reports the Wall Street Journal. Trump has appealed to senators and allies to try to gauge the potential interest in ousting McConnell from the leadership position, but so far he has had little traction. Although the two have been allies for much of Trump’s presidency, McConnell refused to accept the former president’s lies that widespread electoral fraud cost him the 2020 election. Even though the plan Trump never starts, “the talks risk driving a deeper rift between the Republican Party’s most influential figure and its most senior member of elected office,” the Journal notes.
The differences between Trump and McConnell have only grown since the former president left office. McConnell was one of 18 Senate Republicans to vote in favor of a $ 1,000 billion bipartisan infrastructure bill that Trump has voted against. Although Trump has openly expressed his desire for Republican senators to oust McConnell from the leadership position he has held for nearly 15 years, he declined to discuss in a recent interview whether he was trying to bring together potential challengers.
For now, it seems even Trump’s staunchest allies aren’t so keen to join the former president in the plan to oust McConnell. “No, I’m not going to get into this fight,” said Senator Tommy Tuberville, who was one of Trump’s main allies in the Senate. Even the candidates Trump backed have not publicly expressed their desire to oust McConnell from his post.
