GOP senators disagreed with former President Donald Trump’s characterization of the rioters on Capitol Hill after he called them “peaceful” and “great people.”
Trump appeared in an interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo on Sunday, repeating false claims the 2020 election was rigged, and praising the pro-Trump mob who raped the Capitol on the 6th January.
“There was such love at that rally, you had over a million people, they were there for a reason, the election was rigged, they thought the election was rigged,” Trump said in the interview . “That’s why they were there and they were peaceful people, they were great people, the crowd was amazing and I mentioned the word love, love in the air, I never got anything seen from such. “
Some GOP senators took issue with the former president’s description of the deadly events that occurred on January 6.
“I think what people saw with their own eyes reflects a different reality,” said GOP Senator John Cornyn of Texas. Told Igor Bobic of HuffPost.
Senator Shelley Capito, a Republican from West Virginia, also challenged Trump’s characterization of the insurgency.

Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, who was previously President pro tempore of the Senate, decreases to comment on Trump’s remarks and told Bobic he only weighs in on things he himself has read or heard.
During the interview with Bartiromo on Sunday, Trump also raised the possibility that the officer who shot on Capitol Hill rioter Ashli Babbitt was part of a security element of a Democratic member of Congress.
“I will tell you that they know who shot Ashli Babbitt, they are protecting that person,” said the former president. “I also heard that he was the security chief of a certain senior official – a Democrat – and we’ll see because it will come out. It will come out.”
The U.S. Capitol Police officer who shot Babbitt was not part of a security service for a specific member of Congress and has yet to return to duty, according to Tom Winter of NBC News and CNN’s Zachary Cohen, citing police sources.
Representatives for Trump and Capito did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment. A spokesperson for Cornyn said the senator had nothing to comment on beyond his remarks to Bobic.
