For the first time since 2014, the Gophers softball team will open the home playoffs.
The Gophers (41-12) won seventh place in the 64-team Division I tournament, the NCAA revealed Sunday, and will host the state of North Dakota (42-14) around 8:30 pm. Friday.
This is the best all-time performance for the Gophers, who will make their seventh consecutive appearance in the playoffs. In 2014, the Gophers progressed to a super regional.
"We are delighted," said Gophers coach Jamie Trachsel. "We thought we were lucky enough to be at least eight seeded, it's a bit like we expected.
"I think the work we did all season was prepared for that, but everything was out of our control. We have a lot we can be proud of and a lot of enthusiasm for. "
