Gophers Open 2021 with a 3-0 sweep over Michigan State

The University of Minnesota volleyball program opened the spring 2021 season with a 3-0 victory over Michigan State tonight at the Maturi Lodge.
Minnesota was ruled by Adanna rollins with 15 kills and a .519 hit, followed Taylor landfair with 10 (hit .450) and Stephanie Samedy with nine. Regan pittman and Katie myers each had four blocks, while CC McGraw led the team with 13 digs. Melani Shaffmaster had 29 assists, four assists, two aces and six digs.

As a team, the Gophers had 46 kills, hit .384, eight blocks, two aces and 44 digs. The state of Michigan had 38 kills, six aces, one block, 39 digs and was limited to a 15% clip.

Minnesota and the State of Michigan will play again tomorrow at 3 p.m. The match is on BTN + and FOX 9 +.

NOTABLE
Taylor landfair and Melani Shaffmaster made their college debut tonight. Landfair was the No.1 rookie nationally last year. Shaffmaster was ranked No. 16. Both signed up in January 2020 and saw their first action today.
-It was Minnesota’s first gaming action in 401 days. The Golden Gophers last played on December 19, 2019 in the NCAA National Semifinals.

Set 1: Tied at 14-14, Minnesota went on 5-0 en route to a 25-18 set victory. After a kill by Landfair at 15-14, Pittman went on a four-point serve for the 19-14 lead. Minnesota pushed the lead to 20-16 on one murder of Samedy and another murder at 22-17. Rollins added a setpoint kill and a 24-17 lead, while an MSU attacking error gave Minnesota the 1-0 lead. The Gophers have hit 0.333 this set with Rollins scoring six wins.

Set 2: Minnesota came back from a 12-20 deficit to win the set, 26-24 to take a 2-0 lead. After a service error from MSU at 13-20, Minnesota went on a 10-2 run. At 16-22, Shaffmaster returned to the service line and the Gophers scored seven straight points. Minnesota took the lead at 23-22 on a Samedy murder and went up 24-23 with another Samedy murder. Samedy again produced a kill at set point (25-24) and again at 26-24) to go up, 2-0. The Gophers hit .359 in the second for a 2-0 lead.

Set 3: Minnesota led by point 3-2 in the third and won the game, with a 25-16 set victory. Minnesota rose, 10-4, after a Shaffmaster murder. The Gophers were up 10 on a Pittman kill for the 17-7 point. A Pittman block gave the Gophers a 20-12 lead, while a Landfair block put the score at 22-13. Myers added a kill at 23-14 while Landfair pushed him to match point later at 24-16. Myers added a solo block at 25-16 for the set and the match win.
