At the end of the investigation, it is believed that there will be some sort of catharsis – in the case of QAnon, a violent “storm” that includes mass arrests of Trump’s enemies, or, in Wood’s case, the Georgian lawmakers ensuring that the state voters are turned over to Trump.
In the meantime, as long as investigations are ongoing, believers in QAnon will not have to face the reality: that no such arrests are forthcoming and that Biden will be sworn in.
This puts Republican officials in a bind: continue the farce and order endless probes in the 2020 election, or face the wrath of QAnon believers and other Trump supporters living in their individual fantasy lands.
Wood’s intra-Republican struggle attracted a number of other fringe groups. Powell retweeted a claim on Friday that thousands of abandoned Trump ballots were discovered in a Great Lake. The tweet, from a previously little-known account called @tpgwlm, has racked up more than 19,000 retweets to date.
However, even a surface investigation of this claim shows it to be patently false. The source of the story is a collection of fake news sites with names like “Patriot Hat” and “The New York Evening”. In particular, the image used to illustrate the story is marked “SATIRE”.
If the satire advice wasn’t enough, the story itself claims the votes were just rejected ballots from the NBC singing contest The voice.
