Gotham Award nominations: all female directors take home Best Picture

The starting pistol for the awards season has been officially fired with the 30th annual IFP Gotham Awards announcing its nominations and making history. For the first time, women are directing all nominees for best feature film. Among them, “The Assistant” by Kitty Green, “First Cow” by Kelly Reichardt, “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” by Eliza Hittman, “Nomadland” by Chloé Zhao and “Relic” by Natalie Erika James.

In the Best Actor category, Chadwick Boseman received a posthumous nomination for his work in “My Rainey’s Black Bottom,” a performance that is likely to be shortlisted by many award bodies over the coming months. The other nominees were Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”), Jude Law (“The Nest”), John Magaro (“First Cow”) and Jesse Plemons (“I’m Thinking of Ending Things”).

For the actresses, the group gave a very diverse field of cultures and experiences. Nicole Beharie’s turn in “Miss Juneteenth” is a fascinating portrayal, and it’s a great start for her and the film’s award campaigns. The same goes for Yuh-Jung Youn as a beautiful and loving grandmother in Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari”. Youn was the only person from either of the acting categories to be nominated for a supporting role, where she could find love at the Oscars.

It’s certainly not the most crucial awards show on the way to the Oscars, but some of the shutouts were surprising. Among them, “Promising Young Woman” by Emerald Fennell with Carey Mulligan did not materialize with the group, as did “Pieces of a Woman” by Kornél Mundruczó with Vanessa Kirby. Over 500 films were submitted this year, up from 380 in 2019.

Forty-one films and series have been nominated this year, selected by film critics, journalists, festival programmers and film curators.

IFP Members will determine the Gotham Audience Award with nominees from among the 20 films nominated in the Best Feature, Best Documentary, Best International Feature and Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award categories. All current and active members of the IFP have the right to vote. Voting will take place online in December.

The IFP Gotham Awards will take place on Monday, January 11.
