The regular season may not have gone Penn State’s path, but the offseason is off to a good start as rising red-shirted junior left tackle Rasheed Walker announced he would be back at Happy Valley for his fourth season.
The 6-foot-6, 310-pound Walker was planning to be a mid-round pick, but with the option of improving his draft supply in first-round territory, he decided to return for another season.
With Walker’s return, it gives Penn State a ton of experience on the blind side – Walker is a two-year starter, having started the last 22 games for the Nittany Lions at left tackle. Every year Walker has improved and steadily improved his game. If those improvements continue, next season could be (should be?) A reward-filled season for Walker.
We’ll have a projected depth far too soon compared to yours in the next week or two, but Walker is a cold lock to start on the left tackle and really lifts the ceiling of the Nittany Lions offensive line. Walker and Caedan Wallace on the outside, with Des Holmes in left guard, and Mike Miranda and Juice Scruggs in center and / or right guard? These are the ingredients of a very fine attacking front.
Overall, it’s great to pick up some of those 50/50 NFL opening statements. Of course, James Franklin is not part of the “I want a 20 year old to turn down a life changing money case,” but in the case of Castro-Fields, Brisker, Dotson and now Walker, their moves back make sense. And while they’re not coming back just because they want to go out on better terms than 4-5, I think that will be something that comes to their minds as they work this offseason.
