Governor Cuomo announces New York State Clinical Advisory Working Group approves Moderna vaccine

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that the New York State Clinical Advisory Working Group, following the recommendation of the FDA advisory committee for the emergency use authorization of the vaccine Moderna’s COVID-19, reviewed and approved the vaccine for use in New York State. New York expects to receive about 346,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine next week, pending final clearance from the FDA.

The governor also announced that the State Department of Health has approved and issued guidelines for the use of one to two additional doses found in shipments of Pfizer vaccine. It was previously believed that Pfizer vaccine vials each contained five doses, but could potentially contain six or seven doses. Dosing healthcare professionals can use any additional vaccine that can be easily inserted into a syringe to meet the dose requirement. Supplemental vaccine from one vial cannot be combined with supplemental vaccine from another vial to make an additional dose. The New York State Department of Health is releasing guidance today to guide healthcare professionals regarding these additional doses. “New Yorkers are smart, they see the COVID numbers and they understand the risks. I think they’re going to learn from Thanksgiving and I think you’ll see a smarter response during the holiday season. I think we can avoid it. a stop because we can slow the spread and hospitals can handle the increase in cases. It’s now a race between vaccine and COVID, and as we slow the spread we also need to accelerate the distribution of vaccines at the same time ”. Governor Cuomo said. “The sooner we vaccinate people, the faster new cases of COVID decline, and the potential six to nine month timeline is under our control. I believe we had the first vaccination in the country because I think New York is mobilizing faster. and is more organized than any other state. The New York Clinical Advisory Working Group approved Moderna’s vaccine this morning and we expect to receive doses of it next week, which is good news. The best news is that the supply of vaccine doses is actually larger than we thought and we will allow these additional doses to be used today. “
