GT Sport was an amazing game and managed to turn Gran Turismo into a viable and popular esports, but for longtime fans of the franchise it lacked meaningful single-player content. With the release of Gran Turismo 7, developer Polyphony Digital returns to the origins of the series, with the GT campaign.
This is anchored by a three-dimensional map, where you can buy cars, participate in license tests and much more. Series creator Kazunori Yamauchi explains, “The GT Campaign mode is a place where individual players will take their own unique journeys and gain life-learning experiences.” You will take part in various events around the world including – we hope – the Weekend Cup.
But the CaRPG doesn’t stop there: you will also tune your vehicles, clean them at the Car Wash and collect them at the GT Café. It is a bit like collecting cards in sports games like Ultimate Team: you will be tasked with completing “collections”, like Japanese compact cars, in order to earn in-game prizes and rewards.
It looks great: we’re sure it will still include all of the cutting edge online elements that have been popularized by GT Sport, but it adds all the classic campaign content on top of that. We’re confident that Polyphony Digital will continue to improve and iterate on the game throughout the generation, so that it could comfortably become the definitive simulation racing game on PS5.
