Sony PlayStation fans have waited forever for the appropriate next iteration of the Grand tourism video game franchise. Now, it looks like there might be some light at the end of the tunnel with an appropriate teaser video showing cinematic cuts, gameplay, and a very specific March 4, 2022 release date.
The trailer was released during the 40-minute PlayStation Showcase broadcast on September 9, where a plethora of games were shown. Grand tourism is obviously of particular interest to us, and the short video above offers the deepest take on the long-awaited racing title so far. It opens with a properly cinematic score of classical music superimposed on images of Porsche, especially the 917 concept car which debuted in 2019. Previews of tracks and other cars follow, not to mention one. quick interior shot of a Ferrari, and everything looks spectacular.
As the music turns into something more upbeat, so does the action. The quick sections show all kinds of vehicle customization options. We also see a screen showing the photo mode locations, and there is a lot of them. Classic cars appear a bit later, including a family portrait of Nissan Skyline GT-R models because hey, you can’t have Gran Turismo without having Skylines galore. More track photos follow, including longtime classics like the High Speed Ring and new dirt rally courses. The car racing sequences are superb, the sounds are moving and should be coming to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles.
This is where we need to temper the excitement because honestly we’ve all been here. It’s been eight years since GT6 launched on PlayStation 3 and 2017 Gran Turismo Sport was meant to be a holdover from GT7, not the entrenched title it morphed into. When the PlayStation 5 console launched in late 2020, GT7 was supposed to be around the corner for 2021, but then we heard about another delay. It’s not easy to maintain a fan base with years of delays and broken promises, especially with Microsoft’s Forza franchise which releases solid racing titles much more frequently.
With a specific release date now written down, perhaps the very long wait for a new Gran Turismo experience will be over soon.
