A little out of the blue, Polyphony Digital announced that there will be a new update for Gran Turismo Sport coming this week.
The development of the PS4 title seems to be coming to an end for a little while now. So far this calendar year there have been four updates, with two changes to the Sport mode, one adding support for the Olympic Virtual Series and one in July that added the Toyota GR86 ahead of a round of the GR Toyota GT Cup featuring the car. It is one of seven new vehicles added in 2020 and 2021.
However, it is clear that while Polyphony Digital is probably very busy preparing the PS4 and PS5 versions of Gran Turismo 7, GT Sport settings are still on the developer’s radar.
There is no additional information in the announcement at this time about what the content of the update might be. We only know that it will be released on consoles around the same time as an off-schedule maintenance period, scheduled for 0800-1000 UTC on September 9.
This means that GT Sport will be updated just before the PlayStation Showcase, which should reveal more information about the impending GT7. This could suggest that the update will include media scheduled to be unlocked at the appropriate time on Thursday, although that may just be a coincidence of timing.
In the absence of any further promotion from the usual sources – such as the usual Kazunori Yamauchi silhouette teaser images – the most likely outcome of this update is the Sport Mode tweak.
Over the past few weeks, regular online gamers will have noticed a relaxation of driving penalties that could make them look bad, with time penalties and even sportsmanship ratings seemingly barely affected by unfriendly contact. The update may resolve this issue or bring new calculations of BOP.
We will keep you posted on the update status and bring you more information when we have it.
