Take-Two Interactive, publisher of 2K Games, 2K Sports and Rockstar Games titles, buys Codemasters, the makers of racing games Dirt, Grid and F1. The $ 994 million deal is expected to go through in the first quarter of 2021, Take-Two said in a press release on Tuesday.
Strauss Zelnick, president and CEO of Take-Two, said the acquisition of Codemasters would be “highly complementary” to Take-Two’s sports portfolio, which includes NBA 2K, NHL 2K, PGA Tour 2K and WWE 2K. Zelnick praised the UK-based publisher for its “renowned history of building some of the most successful and successful racing franchises in our industry”.
Codemasters itself has grown considerably in recent years with acquisitions from the former team at Evolution Studios (MotorStorm, DriveClub) in 2016 and Slightly Mad Studios (CARS Project, Fast and furious crossroads) in 2019. The latest game from Codemasters, Dirt 5, was released for PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One on November 6. The rally racing game is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X this week.
