Grand Theft Auto V, now available on two generations of platforms with a version for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X / S on the way, refuses to die. The game’s latest contribution to the online zeitgeist is the brief scene where side character Lamar Davis roasts protagonist Franklin Clinton, which has become the basis of an extremely popular meme.
This morning, PlayStation Haven uploaded a YouTube video featuring Black jesus star Gerald “Slink” Johnson and Shawn Fonteno re-enacting their roles as Lamar and Franklin.
(This is the part where I give voice to the unspoken NSFW warning that accompanies the most Grand Theft Auto footage. Intended for an informed audience.)
No one knows how to hurt you like your friends and family.
While that was the logical endpoint of the joke format, model swapping and sometimes even amateur voice acting replaced Lamar with everyone. Kermit the frog at Yakuza protagonist Kazuma Kiryu over the past few months. Again, many of these videos are NSFW, but there is just something about Sponge Bob SquarePants saying “yee yee-ass haircut” asking to be watched.
It’s hard to pinpoint a key detail or moment that made this scene rock the creators and audiences online. The whole thing is hilarious, which is a huge plus, but Lamar crowning an almost lyrical rant with a sung insult helps too. Personally, I always look forward to the “What ?!” in the end, especially when Lamar was replaced by someone as out of place as dark Vador or White as snow.
Whatever the case, at least we’ve got one more thing to distract from Hell World.
