BATON ROUGE – A violent chain of events unfolded on Sunday morning, leaving an elderly woman dead, four others injured and a suspect hospitalized after lawmakers were forced to shoot the man in order to end a wave of chaotic crimes.
The Good Samaritans may have helped prevent the death toll from rising at one of the three crime scenes linked to the tirade.
MPs identified the older woman as Dianne Gafford. The suspect, Aaron Morgan, will be charged with the murder of his grandmother as well as the other shootings once released from the hospital, MPs said.
Gafford was set to celebrate his 79th birthday on Thursday.
East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Deputies said the ordeal began at a house in Wimbledon, near Perkins, near Bluebonnet, where Morgan, 28, killed his identified grandmother later as Gafford, and stabbed his mother. The mother survived. His name has not been released.
The suspect fled and ended up in the parking lot of Alexander’s grocery store on Highland Road. There, MPs said, Morgan stole a vehicle after shooting three people. Doctors at a walk-in clinic in the parking lot helped treat the injured. The victims should be fine, sheriff’s deputies said.
From the parking lot, Morgan again fled and made his way to the corner of Bluebonnet Boulevard and Jefferson Highway, where MPs said he abandoned the stolen vehicle and fled. Morgan pointed a gun at the MPs, the sheriff’s office said, and the MPs fired. Morgan was shot and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome released a statement on the situation, praising MPs, first responders and walk-in clinic workers: “[Sunday] morning, a terrible tragedy occurred in our community where several innocent people were injured and at least one person died. Although there is no longer an active threat thanks to the swift work of our first responders, our public safety agencies are still responding to this traumatic event. We are in communication with law enforcement as more details come to light. Please pray for those who are recovering from their injuries. Thank you also to the good Samaritans who rushed out moments after the incident to help. “
