The wife of country singer Granger Smith revealed Saturday that the organs donated by their son had saved the lives of two people after the death of the boy in a "tragic accident" last month.
Smith's wife, Amber, wrote in an article published Saturday on Instagram that she had decided to help others after her three-year-old son, River, accidentally drowned at his home in Texas, calling this "one of the hardest and easiest decisions to make". the couple has already done.
She noted that there are "more than 113,000 people waiting for a transplant and that 20 people die every day waiting."
"I always knew that I wanted to be a donor if something happened to me one day. I just thought that if I had viable organs, why would I go in the ground with them? My mind would be in heaven, so why not save a life if I could? Amber Smith writes. "Never in a million years, I would have thought to make that decision for my baby."
She said that when three different neuro specialists told them that River had "0% chance of recovering her brain", she said after the shock and the reality: "How can we bury our nice baby without trying to help others?
"Her body is perfect, her organs are perfect, we had to do something," she continued. "There are so many people waiting for an organ to save their lives."
Amber Smith wrote that they had discovered that their "little red-haired hero" had given life to a 49-year-old woman and a 53-year-old man.
She also wrote that when she opened the letter, revealing that River had helped save the lives of two people, she had "cried with sadness and cried for love."
"I am so proud to be the mother of River and I am so grateful to God for giving it to us for these incredible three years," she wrote.
In a video posted on YouTube by the couple in June, Granger Smith highlighted what happened to their son. The crooner "Backroad Song" said he was doing gymnastics with his 7-year-old daughter, London, while his sons, River and Lincoln Monarch, 5, were playing with water guns.
The star said that he had found himself playing CPR a few minutes later.
"I ask these two recipients to live in good health, filled with joy and full force, like Riv," writes Amber Smith in the Instagram post.
The couple also donated more than $ 218,000 to the Dell Children's Medical Center, the hospital that had treated River before his death, said People, adding that the donation was in honor of their son and the work done by the doctors to comfort them throughout this tragedy.
