Fat is the word at Paramount +.
The streaming service ViacomCBS gave a serial order to Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, a prequel to the beloved musical. The 10-episode show is the first pickup under the new Paramount + topper Nicole Clemens – who also runs Paramount TV Studios, which produces the prequel.
The rise of the pink ladies takes place four years before the original fat. According to the show’s hook-up line, “before rock ‘n’ roll reigns, before the T-Birds are the coolest in school, four tired outcast girls dare to have fun in their own way, triggering a moral panic that will change Rydell High forever.
Stockard Channing, Didi Conn, Dinah Manoff and Jamie Donnelly played the Pink Ladies in the 1978 feature film version of Fat.
The show took a long enough path to get the green light at Paramount +. The show was originally titled Fat: Rydell High and secured a direct HBO Max series order in October 2019 under WarnerMedia Entertainment and direct from consumer boss Bob Greenblatt and content director Kevin Reilly.
HBO Max dropped out of the series, however, after a change in leadership that saw HBO director Casey Bloys take the streamer under his control. He then moved on to Paramount +, where he underwent a creative overhaul and earned a new title.
Writer Annabel Oakes (Atypical, awkward.) stayed with the show throughout and will serve as the showrunner of The rise of the pink ladies. She produces with Marty Bowen of Temple Hill and Erik Feig of Picturestart.
Paramount, Temple Hill and Picturestart are also behind a feature film prequel to Fat titled Love of summer, edited by Brett Haley.
