Dramatically increasing the number of Paramount + projects we will have to worry about will either do ourselves or others, “cream,” Hollywood journalist note today that the streaming service picked up the Fat prequel series Rise Of The Pink Ladies for an order of 10 episodes. Referring to the name of the resident “gang” of the film, the series takes place four years before the incidents from the original film, finally revealing the grim sequence of events which led Stockard Channing to be forced to date Rydell High despite turning 33 when Fat was filmed in 1977. (We’re making some assumptions here, admittedly the actual connecting line is all about “four exasperated and exasperated girls ”who “dare to have fun in their own way, triggering a moral panic that will change Rydell High forever. Cared for!)
But while we don’t want to underestimate how deep we will end up finding the deepest story of the larger Fat Expanded Universe, the behind-the-scenes story of this show is actually a lot juicier, at least at this point. See. tThe series was originally developed two years ago for HBO Max, when it was still known as Fat: Rydell High. (Which, right there, was a much more boring title, and did not even include the name of a single apple cultivar.) (Yes, we looked up the “proper” name for a breed of apples;.) But while the series received a series order by the original crop of executives at the helm of the streaming service (around the time it was picking up titles like Christopher Nolan’s “Worst Streaming Service”), it was scrapped in 2020 when HBO president Casey Bloys gained full creative control over the service and presumably started asking questions like “Why, in the year of our lord 2020, are we doing a prequel tv show about Fat? “
But the Pink Ladies were not to stay in the air, and therefore Paramount Television, which produces the series, with AtypicalAnnabel Oakes in a consistent position as a showrunner throughout these ups and downs has decided to keep the series alive (give or take a new title) on her own streaming service. And that’s the prequel to the Fat prequel show, not to be confused with Love of summer, the Fat prequel movie, which is also in preparation, because why not.
