The Royals are not granting interviews to Oprah. It just isn’t done. Then again, Prince Harry, the second son of Prince Charles and the late Diana, Princess of Wales, herself a true iconoclast, was never going to be a prince who made things right by the book. Now Harry and his wife, US-born Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, sit down with celebrity royal Oprah Winfrey for a much-anticipated TV interview on Sunday.

Royal palace courtiers are probably nervous about Sunday’s Oprah with Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special. They like to control the image of the family, and Meghan and Harry are now wild cards. Here’s everything you need to know about the interview.

When is Oprah’s interview with Harry and Meghan?

The Oprah, Meghan and Harry special will air on CBS on Sunday, March 7 at 8 p.m. PT / ET and 7 p.m. CT. See below for how to watch it if you don’t have a cable.

The 90-minute interview will begin with Oprah and Meghan chatting, as the veteran talk show host brings the pregnant Duchess to talk about marriage, motherhood and the unique pressures of royal life. Prince Harry will later join and the two are expected to discuss their move to the United States and their future plans. You just know baby Archie will be kind of making an appearance, because if Oprah knows anything, it’s how to make great TV, and Royal Babies really are great TV.

CBS released three video clips.

How did we get here?

Normal protocol for someone as high up in the royal family as Harry would be to live in the UK forever, as an active member of the Royal Family – attending hospital openings, museum exhibits, at board meetings, play bingo with retirees, and generally just support Queen Elizabeth II in a calm but respectful manner. But it was never going to be the preferred path for rebellious Harry and his US-born actress wife. Realistically, with his father Charles, brother William, and William and Kate’s three children all lined up on the throne before him, Harry was never going to reign. So he and his wife, perhaps inspired by the late Diana’s love for America, decided to go their own way, the Fleetwood Mac way.

You may have heard that Meghan and Harry (their royal titles are too tangled up to continue to be used here) first moved to Canada and then to California in 2020. In February 2021, after a year of trying, Buckingham Palace announced that the couple will not return as active members of the Royal Family, through which they will remain “much loved”.

And Meghan and Harry have been busy. In 2020, they signed an agreement to develop programs for Netflix, and they also signed an agreement with Spotify to produce and host their own podcasts. They reside in America now, and the Americans are going to America. So the Oprah interview, while not something an ordinary royal would do, is a perfect match for what a Hollywood celebrity would assume.

Why Oprah?

Why not Oprah? Although Winfrey quit doing her iconic talk show in 2011, she remains one of the most powerful and well-known women in American media, and perhaps the world. Harry is used to powerful women, of course – just look at his mother and grandmother. And Oprah has been a part of the royal couple’s life for quite some time now. She attended their 2018 royal wedding and lives not far from their home in Montecito, California. In fact, it was Oprah who gave baby Archie the cute book, Duck! Rabbit !, which he was seen reading with Meghan in a video posted to mark his first birthday in May 2020.

Will there be bombs?

Palace lifers can be forgiven for panicking. In 1995, Harry’s mother Diana sat down for a TV interview with British journalist Martin Bashir. She ate pretty well – discussing her bulimia, the lack of support she felt she had received from the Royal Family and Prince Charles’ infidelity with Camilla Parker-Bowles, now his wife.

The teases for the interview indicate it’s going to really rock the royals. In a clip, Winfrey announces, “You said some pretty shocking things here,” then puts her hands up and says, “Wait, wait – wait, wait a minute.” She also emphasizes that nothing is forbidden for discussion.

And in a clip, released Wednesday, Oprah asks Meghan what she thinks of the palace “hearing you speak your truth today”.

Meghan responds that she doesn’t know how the couple can be expected to remain silent “if there is an active role The Firm is playing in perpetuating the lies about us, and if that carries a risk to lose things … there is a lot that has already been lost. ”

Yes, she really did say “The Firm,” one of the most argillous terms for the royal family. But even leaving that aside, it is likely that the old guard of Buckingham and Windsor is fuming with every word of that sentence. She seems to suggest a campaign of lies about the couple, coming straight from the palace itself.

Lighter rates could be discussed. Meghan is expecting the couple’s second baby in 2021, so maybe she will share some information about it. Name preferences will almost certainly not be revealed, and it seems unlikely that Meghan will respond whether she has a girl or a boy. But it’s possible that Oprah is making some sort of hint on how long the couple should wait for the new kid.

Perhaps the couple will share more information about their future business ventures in the Netflix and Spotify worlds. It would be standard celebrity interview trick, but it’s always weird to hear royals – even retired royals – discussing making money from entertainment.

Royal watchers will take note of all the little intimate details – glimpses of the California Sussex mansion, brief babbling and laughs from Archie, appearances of the couple’s dogs – the kind of stuff People magazine covers about movie stars. And anyway, this is new territory for the Queen’s grandson. The royal family have always lived in front of the cameras, but generally in a guarded manner. Oprah is nothing if not unattended.
