She left life at the age of 57, the creator of the much-loved cartoon series "SpongeBob", Stephen Hillenberg.

The designer, screenwriter and director had announced last year that he was suffering from ALS, which degenerates the nervous system.

His death was confirmed by the Nickelodeon Children's Program Network, which describes "SpongeBob".

"We share sadly the news of the death of Stephan Hillenberg […] Today, we observe a moment of silence to pay tribute to his life and his work, "he wrote on his Twitter network.

Former professor of marine biology, Hillenberg has managed to create distinctive and sensitive characters.

"SpongeBob" was displayed for the first time in 1999 and since then, it has become a worldwide success. More than 200 episodes have been seen so far.
