Candidate divers look forward to diving into the crystal clear waters of Kythnos. Their surprise grows when they see a man in a wheelchair approach the dive center in the Loutra region and inform them that he is the coach and that he will know all the "secrets" "from the bottom

The Marsh Mantle is the first paraplegic in Greece to receive a diving instructor diploma. The course of his life changed after a car accident at the age of 20 while he was a naval officer. At first, he could feel all his dreams shatter, he quickly changed his mind and found a way out in the sea.

"I was very young when I was a young man. I had the accident. At first I thought the universe was destroyed, but then I realized what had happened. Since the hospital, I have not stayed in what the doctors told me. I went to the library and I was looking to see if I could heal. I was very supported by the Navy who sent me to a special center in Germany. And I realized that there was no cure. It was then that I decided to see the day differently, "said today at the APE-MPA Manthos Maras, 52 years old.

In the beginning, he started to do some special sport and participate in wheelchair races. An active and inventive man, shortly after the accident, he decided to leave his father's house and stay alone. He wanted to prove that he could do everything as before the accident.

"At one point, at the age of 28 and disabled, a diving instructor appeared, so I started, by accident, I saw that I was there. I really like and want to stay under water, I had a relationship with Kythnos, we had a family vacation on the island but I never plunged it ", he adds.

The only sure thing is that he will never forget his first diving experience. "It was for me the ultimate freedom. The ultimate comfort and movement. The first night, closing my eyes, I saw swimming in the water.I realized that I I was done for that and so I got to the stage of the coach. If I like something, I do not stop it.I see this as a challenge. " , recalls Mr. Maras, explaining how he managed to get the instructor's diploma

But what could "enchant" someone at the bottom, Beyond the freedom of movement? "From the moment you put your head under water, you and the universe are. You live in a different world. You do not think about problems, everyday life, your work, your anxiety. Even if you dive several times in one place, you will always find something new to enchant you. "

His new love, Mr. Maras went further and founded a diving school at Kythnos Baths, the possibility, in recent years, for young and old, but also for people with disabilities. explore reefs, caves, shipwrecks, crystal clear waters and beautiful landscapes full of life, corals and infinite colors beyond imagination
