Largest supercomputer in the world mimics the human brain

After 12 years of hard work and £ 15 million in financial support, Spiking Neural Network Architecture (SpiNNaker) was finally created. The new supercomputer was built and designed by the University of Manchester. Its construction began in 2006 and was recently launched.

How does SpiNNaker work?

It sends small amounts of information to different places at the same time, just like the parallel communication technique of the human brain. This process is opposed to most computers that send huge amounts of information from one place to another via a standard network.

SpiNNaker manufacturers plan to badimilate one billion organic neurons using this supercomputer. Although smaller than the "100 billion connected neurons by 1.5 million synapses", it will bring us a little closer in understanding the mechanisms of the human brain.

Steve Furber, a professor of computer engineering at the University of Manchester, said: "We have created a machine that works more like a brain than a traditional computer, which is extremely exciting."

The development team behind the supercomputer thinks it will help them discover the secrets of the human brain by conducting large-scale pioneering simulations. In addition, SpiNNaker can be used to power an AI-based robot, called SpOmnibot, capable of recognizing and directing objects.
