On Monday afternoon, three men, two of them carrying bags, entered the Dorotheum auction hall in Vienna. A few minutes later, a painting by Pierre Ovgust Renoir made wings.
The bandits acted in a few minutes, without trying to hide their faces. They climbed to the second floor, approached the table "Gulf, sea, green cliffs", took it out of its frame and left. According to the police, they would apparently be professionals and would have separated before leaving the building, coming out through different exits.
The project was to be auctioned on Wednesday. Although this is one of Renoir's less known paintings, its value is estimated at between 120,000 and 160,000 euros.
"It was very fast, no one was aware of it," said Inspector Patrick Maierhofer, spokesman for the Vienna Police. Although he said that the authors did not cut the picture to remove him from the frame, he did not specify how they had done "not to give ideas to others".
The police published photographs of the three perpetrators whose faces were recorded by security cameras.
