The mayor of Thessaloniki, Yannis Boutaris, has greeted the Christmas tree on Aristotelous Square tonight and the city has officially taken its festive rhythm.

"The holiday season officially begins, we wish for many years," said Mr. Boutaris, supervised by his administration officials during the illumination of the natural tree and the beginning of the concert with the famous artist.

It was the last time the mayor was invited to mark the start of the holiday season in Thessaloniki.

On the spot however, the Deputy Minister of the Interior, Katerina Netopoulou, in charge of issues relating to Macedonia and Thrace, which seems to aspire to become the successor of Boutari, has also taken office.

Katerina Netopoulou, after wishing a happy birthday, added: "the future opens before us, it must be promising for the city and its citizens".

In the central square, there are already four houses with creative activities where Santa Claus and the elves wait for the young and old to receive the letters with the festive greetings.

On the festivals, the streets of Thessaloniki have been decorated, with the pedestrian route of Agia Sophia to magnify the eyes of residents and visitors, thanks to the blue sky and the Peftasteri who have returned to the street Filiki Kairia.

According to the arts program of the municipality, there will be music groups in the city on Christmas Eve on Aristotelous Square, while New Year's Eve will be on stage with the band Blue and Myronas Stratis. The advent of 2019 will be marked by a pyrotechnic show sponsored by the Greek Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
