When it was decided to import from the "Council of Agricultural Products" cheap potatoes from Turkey, Turkish Cypriots have been queuing up in warehouses to buy a pound of 10 kilograms at 3.8 pounds per kilo (about 57 minutes), the Cypriot news agency reported.
According to Kipris, in two days, 25 tons of potatoes were sold warehouses of the "Agricultural Products Council" of Nicosia and Famagusta. As the chairman of the board has said, it is expected that an additional 75 tons of potatoes will arrive from Turkey, their total order going up to 100 tons.
"For the first time, we have seen this, a queue for the world to buy potatoes, and that to your own government," said during the debate on the approval of the budget from the "Ministry of Agriculture", the opposition MP SPE National Unity) and a farmer himself, Nazim Tsiavousoglou.
Criticisms of potato imports into Turkey concern domestic production which is limited and can not meet the growing needs of the population and tourism.
