Vangelis Dimitreas was born in Melissi, Corinthia, in 1934. He studied with IKY at the School of Fine Arts in Athens at the Moralis Laboratory (1958-1963). During the years of dictatorship, he worked in Paris (1967-1975), took courses in sociology of art at the Sorbonne and, parallel to painting, he took part, in an artistic and political way, in the events of May 68 in Paris. His first solo exhibition in Athens took place in 1969 (Center for Technological Applications).
Individual and collective exhibitions followed in Greece, France and other European countries. His early work focused on the expressive possibilities of a disciplined writing, with recognizable forms, but without naturalistic facilities. He published his artistic inspiration emphasizing the strictly structured compositions and the precision of the drawing. At first he avoided color and preferred the black writing of black on white, which fit perfectly with the critical content of his works.
Later, he turned to three-dimensional structures with various materials. In his latest painting, he addresses issues of historical memory and personalities that have shaped the recent past. His presence is not limited to his exhibition activity. His theoretical training allowed him to participate in conferences on an artistic or philosophical theme, to give lectures and to publish articles and studies in various forms.
His interest in the social functioning of the art was also expressed very early, with his participation in Art Group A, then at the Fine Arts Center, at Group 4+ and at the Education Group at the University. 39, art and communication. He first taught (1965-1967) at the Technology Applications Center (KTE). Back from Paris, he taught drawing at Vakalo School and at ASKT (1981-1985). In 1984 he was elected professor at the School of Fine Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and since 2002 he is professor emeritus.
