It turns out that the broadcast of the Oscars does not need a host.

Of course, the title that comes out of Sunday's Oscars is that Green paper and Bohemian Rhapsody were the big winners – Green paper won three awards, including the best picture, and Bohemian Rhapsody won four, including the best actor for Rami Malek. (This was despite the fact that both films had decidedly mixed reviews.) Bohemian RhapsodyRecognized director Bryan Singer was charged with numerous sexual misconducts and did not seem to bother voters. In fact, nobody even mentioned Singer. It was as if the film had not been directed by anyone, so much was it excised from the story of the disconcerting march of the Oscar film.

Roma, representing Netflix in its constant attempt to embark on serious filmmaking, is also doing well, winning major wins for the foreign language film and both best cinematography and best director for Alfonso Cuaron.

But the other reason is that the ceremony did not have an organizer, did not seem to need it and was not excessively long. There was little charge and pleasant musical performances, and even legitimately funny from time to time. It is true that in the weeks leading up to the ceremony, everything seemed to be collapsing: the host, Kevin Hart, backtracked, canceled the plan to did not nominate the songs, but they also canceled the project of transferring four awards during the commercials and in the end … the show was pretty good. It turns out that the essence of what you lose without a host is made up of the self-indulgent flopsweaty host bits that are not funny anyway.

Maya Rudolph, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were the closest to the hosts. They appeared early, after Queen's opening performance (which is now led by Adam Lambert, who is certainly doing his best). The three women were funny and charming, animating and mocking at the same time only a few minutes. Do not forget that Fey and Poehler have received excellent reviews because the organizers of the Golden Globes a few years ago. They should perhaps, along with Rudolph, host whatever suits them best for a while. Perhaps they are the ones who have deciphered the secret code.

Apart from the awards, there really was not much on the show, with the exception of the musical performances, which were probably put forward by the winner of the best song, " Shallow "of A star is born. It was destined to win since the trailer of the film appeared and was performed live by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. (Kendrick Lamar and SZA did not seem to interpret "All Stars" from Black Panther, which would probably have been the best opportunity of the series to catch the younger viewers it claims to always be wooing.) "Shallow" has always been, and "Shallow" it was. Lady Gaga, winner of an Oscar, welcomes you.

The funny thing is that even though this ceremony does not have the chance to make stupid arrangements and stunts, such as distributing food to the public, it emphasizes the prices themselves. So it was a ceremony that will be very different for you depending on your preference for the most awarded movies – Green paper and Bohemian Rhapsody especially but Roma as well.

Some presentations dodged the most controversial films and offered pleasant and non-controversial moments: Regina King won her first well-deserved Oscar for her supporting role in If Beale Street could speak. Black PantherCostume designer Ruth Carter and decorator Hannah Beachler were honored for their work on the stunning look of Wakanda. And even if you do not like it Green paperMahershala Ali was certainly the best thing about it, and he won the Best Supporting Actor Award.

In the best actress, Glenn Close was to win his first Oscar (on his seventh nomination) for Wifebut Olivia Colman won for The favourite, the only prize that the film Yorgos Lanthimos received all night. Although it was hard not to like Close, Colman is an extremely charming person in presenting acceptance speeches, and his performance in the film is certainly indelible.

There were more firsts: Spider-Man: Towards the Spider-Verse He is the best competitor in the feature film category, and his victory is a blow to experimentation and inclusion in lucrative genres where both are sometimes overlooked. Its director, Peter Ramsey, is the first black director to win such a victory in the category.

It was satisfying to see Spike Lee win the best adapted screenplay for BlacKkKlansman after only having one honorary Oscar on his shelf. Lee distributes his eyebrows generously and his dizziness carefully, so what a pleasure to see him jump into the arms of the presenter and former collaborator Samuel L. Jackson in the best visual of the night. And speaking of famous directors, Alfonso Cuaron Roma won the Best Foreign Language Film award, giving Netflix its first win outside the documentary categories. Cuaron also won the Best Director Award, certainly the first to win a feature-length feature primarily produced for home streaming. (This is not an exhaustive list of winners, this list is here.)

But beyond that, it's almost impossible to separate the question of who gained experience from watching the show. It all sounds more personal than usual, in that it relies more on the movies you've loved. For me, many great prizes have been awarded to films that will not age well: Green paper will probably be considered a winner of the best exceptionally low image in the coming years, not to mention all these awards for the mediocre aggressive Bohemian Rhapsody, who uses Queen's music to make up for the fact that it's just a coherent movie.

In addition, the two films are completely retrograde, offering respectively queerness and race visions that seem to have been torn since about 1993. Green paper said; he talked about the time of history and the ongoing struggle for racial justice, but not much of the film.) Each year the two films will look worse, so if there is a ferocious but honest consolation for those who are disappointed Green paperDefeating the best nominated (and unsuccessful) films for the best picture is that Sunday night was the beginning of his long life as a notoriously dubious winner. (Filmmakers deserve a basket of fruits from the team that realized crash to take some of the pressure.)

This preference for all that is safe, standard and neat has ruined the rewards for me, in part because there was so little to hide behind the show. There was no host to have an opinion about it that had nothing to do with who was winning and who was losing. A tighter show is, by definition, more win-win oriented. Here, if you are a Bohemian Rhapsody or Green paper In part, these rewards were probably right for you. But if you are me, they were not.
