Greenpeace activists hang on Houston bridge protest ahead of democratic debate

Twenty-two protesters from Greenpeace USA have climbed the Fred Hartman Bridge over the Houston Ship Channel, with the goal of ending oil and gas transportation through the canal, the non-profit group said Thursday.

The climate crisis has become one of the preeminent issues in the fight for the Democratic nomination, with polls showing it among the most important, if not the most troubling, issues of the minds of Democratic voters. All high-level Democratic candidates have issued radical proposals to fight climate change, with major differences in how everyone would pay for their plans.
"We challenge all the candidates on stage tonight to promise to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable when they become president," Greenpeace USA says on Twitter Thursday, in front of all the leading candidates at the 2020 Democrats' field meeting at Texas Southern University.

The group called on leaders to engage in the Green New Deal and "embrace a fair transition to renewable energy."

"We are in a climate emergency created by CEOs of fossil fuels and compounded by (President Donald) Trump," said Annie Leonard, executive director of the organization, in a statement. "We can either take bold steps to combat the climate crisis today, or suffer the consequences: more floods, more mega-storms and more fires – in the years to come. come."

Local law enforcement is on site and vehicles are traveling on the bridge. CNN reached out to the La Porte police.

At a press conference Thursday, the deputy head of the Harris County Sheriff, Tim Navarre, said that a call had been made to the police as a "wreck on the bridge".

Navarre said the incident had turned out to be a pickup truck full of protesters who stopped on the bridge and caused an accident.
