Several environmental activists hung from the Fred Hartman Bridge in Houston on Thursday morning to protest the use of fossil fuels and challenge Democratic presidential candidates to prepare for debate to hold the industry accountable. .

Greenpeace USA, an environmental non-governmental organization, said in a tweet that it was demonstrating in front of the bridge to "confront" President Donald Trump and "the oil sector".

A video shared by the group shows several protesters using colorful banners to hang at the bridge over the water.

Travis Nichols, a spokesman for Greenpeace, told NBC News that 11 activists are suspended from the bridge and 11 others are there to get support. They plan to stay on deck for 24 hours, he said.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez of Harris County said the department was monitoring the event and two northbound lanes were closed.

"Our priority is the safety of all," said Gonzalez in a tweet.

The protest comes hours before the third-round Democratic 2020 presidential debate on Thursday night at Texas Southern University.

"We are challenging every candidate on stage tonight to promise to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for becoming president," the group wrote, adding the "PeopleVsOil" hashtag.
