Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance each threw an interception in Sunday’s preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers. Each throw sparked debate on social media. Did the quarterback throw the ball out of range or did the wide receiver fail to make the big play? Or was it a bit of both?
Analyst Greg Cosell sided with the receivers. The situations Garoppolo and Lance found themselves in, the placement of the ball should have been better.
“Every time a ball hits a catcher’s hand, everyone says, ‘Oh he should catch it,’” Cosell said this week on The rich Eisen show. “And it’s always easy to say, but when you’re clean in the pocket and a receiver is open in this league, you have to put it on his hands. He’s the NFL quarterback.
“In this situation, Rich, you don’t want to ask your catcher to take a good catch. If you’re clean in the pocket and the catcher is open, the ball needs to be put on his hands. Lance needs to get better at that. He did several double clutches and did so in his first game (against the Chiefs).
This leads to what Cosell sees as the two-quarterback’s biggest flaw in the game. That’s right; the analyst identified the same shortcoming for Garoppolo and Lance. Of course, the biggest difference is that Garoppolo is a seasoned veteran and Lance, 21, has only played two preseason games.
Neither quarterback consistently puts football where it needs to be, even under the right circumstances.
“I think the problem with Jimmy G… is that the placement of the ball with Jimmy G is not as precise as you would like in this offense because it’s a very specific offense,” said Cosell. “We know Jimmy G can perform. He did.
“The issue with Lance isn’t the physical traits, but it becomes the execution of specific games. And his ball placement isn’t as precise as it should be, either.”
With both quarters flawed, why not just start Lance rather than Garoppolo? The 49ers gave up some of the future draft capital to trade the draft for him. Lance, not Garoppolo, is clearly the quarterback of the future.
While Lance has shown flashes of the quarterback he could become, he’s still a rookie and the Niners believe they have a championship roster in place. Still, the young quarterback’s bigger arm and athleticism must be appealing to Shanahan.
“And there would be concerns, I guarantee you, with [Lance] for Kyle Shanahan, right now too, “Cosell said before adding,” I guess it comes down to whether he thinks he can do more things with Lance because of the racing element, of the designed racing element. “

That bodes well for the San Francisco 49ers, who potentially have more depth in the quarterback than in any other season under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
